How to Get Back into a Workout Routine | Desert Shield FitnessIf it’s been a while since you had a regular workout routine, here are some suggestions on how to successfully get back on track:

1. Ramp up gradually.

The first few weeks back in the gym, you might have to hold yourself back. Rather than doing too much too soon, focus on ramping up gradually. Give your body a chance to adapt to your new workout routine. As much as you might want to work out every day and pile on the intensity right away, be patient. Try to emphasize consistency first.

2. Listen to your body.

Again, it’s easy to be excited about starting a new workout routine or program. But it’s a challenge to sometimes hold yourself back. As you’re getting back into a regular routine, listen to your body. And make sure that rest and recovery in between workouts is a priority.

3. Set fitness goals.

As you’re getting back into a workout routine, it’s a good idea to set fitness goals. As you go through the process of creating these goals, be honest about your current fitness level and what you can realistically work toward at this point. If your fitness goals become unrealistic or too much of a stretch, it might hurt your motivation and cause you to feel disappointed at the gym. Once you have one or two realistic goals, write them down and then put them someplace where you’ll see them throughout the day.

4. Keep track of your progress.

Not only is it helpful to write down your goals, but it’s also a great idea to keep track of your progress. Recording your workouts helps you create a consistent workout routine as it adds a sense of structure to your training. And by keeping track of your workouts and progress, you’ll know exactly when you’ve hit a benchmark. Take some time to celebrate even small successes.

5. Work with a coach or personal trainer.

Having a coach or a personal trainer to guide you through the process has a lot of benefits when you’re just getting back to working out. Your coach can help you improve your fitness, develop consistency, as well as provide some accountability for your workouts.
